End of Year Expectations

Spring term

Welcome to Spring in Otley Class! We are investigating the Magnificent Achievements of ancient civilisations, in particular, the Ancient Greeks and the Romans. We have a day with 'History off the Page' which is an immersive role play experience with workshops and activities and will even include a Greek Feast with authentic entertainment like dancing and play performance.

English

Our class read is Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, which we are really enjoying! So far, we have written instructions for capturing a Greek monster and how to make a clay coil pot.

Maths

Maths covers a range of areas, some which we review and others we are learning about for the first time. We have spent time working with fractions, decimals and percentages, as well as area and perimeter.

Our Medium Term Plan (MTP) provides more detail about what we are learning about this Spring term.

PE

We have two PE sessions each week; Tuesdays with Mr Gates and Thursday with Mrs Pryce-Hall. Hockey is the focus of Tuesday's sessions and fitness on the Thursday sessions.

RE

We will be learning about Buddhism and how the Triple Refuge helps Buddhists on their journey through life.

French

Across the school, we are learning about animals of the zoo. Our focus will be using the correct article to go with the noun, as well as being able to read and write in French as well as speak it.

Computing

We are very fortunate in UKS2 to have the expertise of Mrs Jacks who comes in fortnightly to teach us computing. Mrs Jack is a specialist computing teacher and she always delivers an exciting session. On the 'inbetween' week, we have Computing as a class, where we will plan and then create our own game.

Music

We are learning to sing 'You've got a Friend'. We will also be learning to play our recorders and glockenspiels along to the song as well as learning about warming up our voices and bodies for singing.

Art and Design Technology (DT)

In art, we will be making replica Greek vases using a coiling technique and in DT we will make an authentic and traditional Greek soup after sampling other soups, learning about seasonlity and finally, preparing and making the soup.

Photos of our work- more will be added as we go through the year.

Summer

Autumn

We start our Autumn term with the Topic 'The Land of the Free'. We will spend time investigating North America and the geographical lay out of the different states.

As it is set in America, our class read is 'holes' by Louis Sachar; our English lessons will use this text as their focus.

Our Maths lessons follow a spiral curriculum, where we visit a number of different Mathematical areas over the week. Learning and recalling multiplication facts up to 12 x 12 is covered at least twice each week, in addition to accessing 'TT Rockstars' to work on our tables.

The Science focus for this half-term is 'plants' and the following half-term topic is 'forces'.

We are fortunate to start this term with a weekly swimming session at The Kingfisher Leisure Centre, have will continue this up to the Christmas holidays. Mr Gates takes the second PE session, where we are learning the skills and rules for playing Handball.

On a fortnightly basis, Mrs Jacque deliver a Computing session, which Mrs Pryce-Hall follows up the next week. We loved these sessions and learn new skills very quickly!

RE will focus on the religious belief of reincarnation, and our PSHE sessions will cover the different types of relationships which occur in our lives, including those online.

We will have fortnightly French and Music sessions, where we will learn and rehearse greetings in French, whilst Music uses Pharrell Williams' 'Happy' as the focus.
