Hengrave - Miss Williams

HENGRAVE CLASS

We are a mixed year 5 and 6 class.

We are taught by Miss Williams. Our Teaching Assisstants are

Mrs S Theobald and Mrs L Webber.

Homework is set on Wednesdays and due in the following Wednesday. Our PE day is Monday. This term we go swimming on a Thursday morning. Your child will need a swimming hat on Thursdays as well as suitable swimwear (not long, baggy swim shorts), a towel and they will need to ensure earrings are removed.

This term our topic is 'Magnificent Achievements'.

We will be learning about the Ancient Greeks and what they beleived, what they achieved and about how the political structure worked. We have a day with 'History off the Page' which is an immersive role play experience with workshops and activities and will even include a Greek Feast with authentic entertainment like dancing and play performance. In art, we will be making replica Greek vases using a coiling technique and in DT we will make an authentic and traditional Greek soup after sampling other soups, learning about seasonlity and finally, preparing and making the soup.

Our book for this half term is Percy Kackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. The book is based on Greek myths but is set partly in modern day New York. Our writing focus for this half term will be instructions and then newspapers, all linked to Greek Myths. Throughout the half term we will be reading the text as a class, answering ‘VIPERS’ questions focusing on vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summarisng and sequencing skills.

Additionally, there will be weekly SPAG homework and spellings.

Please support us by hearing your child read as often as possible. We have a fantastic treat this year for children who frequently read. Reading 4 times per week will be rewarded with a trip to the TGS pool, a picnic in the park and ice cream for all children who reach the goal. We will monitor reading frequency weekly so please ask your child how they are progressing towards the target!

Maths

We begin the half term with multiplication and division including long multiplication and long division. We will look at measuring angles, are and perimeter, properties of parallelograms and triangles, and begin work on fractions. We work in a way which frequently revisits topics rather than blocking work in UKS2.  You can support us by ensuring children complete weekly homework and attend homework club if they are struggling. You can also help by making sure children know their times tables to 12 x 12. There are various websites and games to help. We like ‘Hit the Button’ and the DK ten minutes a day times table app.

We are looking at magnets and how they attract and repel and at the poles. We will conduct some experiments and then create games linked to Greek myths using magnetism and forces of attraction and repelling.

PE

Swimming is on Thursday mornings. Your child will need suitable swimwear, a towel anmd a swimming hat on a Thursday and no earrings are to be worn to the pool. Swimming is an essential part of the National Curriculum and is not an optional activity.

RE

We will be learning about Buddhism and how the Triple Refuge helps Buddhists on their journey through life.

French

Across the school, we are learning about animals of the zoo. Our focus will be using the correct article to go with the noun, as well as being able to read and write in French as well as speak it.

Computing

We are very fortunate in UKS2 to have the expertise of Mrs Jack who comes in fortnightly to teach us computing. Mrs Jack is a specialist computing teacher and she always delivers an exciting session.

Music

We are learning to sing 'You've got a Friend'. We will also be learning to play our recorders and glockenspiels along to the song as well as learning about warming up our voices and bodies for singing.

Parent evening consultations will be in Spring term part 2, after the February half term. Please see the school newsletter for dates and timings.
